THANKFUL FOR YOU

Planting, nurturing and harvesting are numbing cycles if one’s bounty is but stacked and stored.

Selecting the perfect bird would be meaningless if Thanksgiving was a ‘little red hen’ experience.

The trip over the river and through the woods would be far less joyful if grandparent’s arms weren’t outstretched.

Gratitude for the feast spread upon the table would seem hollow if the surrounding chairs were vacant.

Clearing the remnants becomes drudgery if many hands don’t make the task light.

That overstuffed feeling is somewhat alleviated by knowing that the many are well satisfied.

It didn’t come as a seismic jolt, but I am grateful that over the years a significant shift has taken place in my life that where once my gratitude was centered on stuff, it has now gravitated to being dominated by thankfulness for meaningful relationships.

Although I am thankful for the all the technical marvels which have blessed my life, I am much more grateful for the tremendous tentacles which this technology gives me to reach across decades and around the world to establish and reestablish loving friendships.

Although I am thankful for my new titanium knee joint, I am much more thankful for the medical team of doctors, surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and pharmacists who have become part of my life and helped me make this piece of metal functional.

Although I am thankful for our warm and peaceful home, I am much more grateful that Kathleen is here to ad measures to the warmth and peace and for family and friends who continually surround us.

Although I am thankful for a life which has been prosperous and healthy, I am more grateful for all with whom we have been able to share our blessings and have added meaningfully to our well-being.

I AM THANKFUL FOR YOU!

  9. Pres. Riley,

I too am thankful for all you described. I am grateful to be on your mailing list and for the wonderful way you put feeling into words.

This has been a rough week as I watch the fall leaves fall and re-live the loss of our son. November marks two years since his accident, but it is amazing how my mind can go right back to every detail of that week in an instant. The sound of a helicopter, or a ambulance reminds me how fragile life is and that we cannot take for granted any of those relationships you described.

This fall has been especially hard for Nevada. First the train wreck, then the senseless shootings at the I Hop in Carson city. In September the horrible plane crash at the Reno Air Races, that took 11 lives and wounded another 75 people. Friday there was a horrible fire in Reno that destroyed many homes and burned over 2,000 acres. All those physical possessions were rubble in a few minutes.

We are so blessed to have the gospel in our lives and to know that Heavenly Father has a plan for us.

Thank you for the part you have played in our lives. For being our Stake President and for your example. I hope your knee surgery went better than I anticipated. As the saying goes, I feel your pain! I will be getting knee number two in January.

Thanks for being you. Please give Kathy a hug for me and have a blessed Turkey Day.

Love, Ann, Jim and family (Bradshaw)

P.S. Carol Anderson has officially moved into our ward and she is such a nice addition. She is living with her daughter Jen. I understand you were her home teacher and she is also grateful to you. We made that connection one Sunday, when I used a quote from one of your “Thoughts” in one of my Relief Society Lessons. She is now working on my homemaking committee and I am enjoying getting to know her.

  10. Dear Brother Riley, It sounds as if you are well on the mend. Congratulations! And I am thankful for your optimism and good health.
Thanks for helping put this week into its right perspective. It's a great holiday for me, partially because I get to celebrate a daughter's b-day as well.
I will be going to Colombia January 2 to 31st. I'll be in Bogota for 6 days, Medellin for 5, and then over to Cartegena for the remainder of the month. In Cartegena I'll be doing some volunteer work, probably with street children.
I'd be glad to take anything or talk/see anyone you'd like me to while I am there.
Do have a marvelous Thanksgiving, hopefully realizing just a tad how many people are thankful for their friendship with you.

    Con amor,
    Bonnie Lynn

  15. Bill, the Blessed and beloved, :)
I sometimes wonder about that for which we find ourselves most thankful, i.e., thankful independent of scriptural exhortation. I suspect that a great deal of our satisfaction and comfort in life is provided by those things which give us comfort and satisfaction in this world as sentient, social animals.
We are a herd or pack species, so as we age, by instinct as well as by need we find ourselves relying more on the pack for our well being. It is by nature and by nurture (developed from nature) that we come to value our family and friends more and more as we age. As thinking animals, we rationalize all of this into a meaningful context.

That is not to say that it is without meaning, independent of this very natural human social context; I believe, by faith, that it is.

  18. Christina and I are grateful for your love and friendship as we sat around your family table for Sunday meals when we were first starting our family. Your influence and love have gone with us as we have sat around our own family table over the years and invited others to join us as you did for us. We now travel to join our children and grandchildren around their tables in great love and joy. We look forward to celebrating this week with all of them around our table in giving thanks for all things that we have been blessed with.
Thank you for helping us get our start.

  25. Hello Dear President Riley, It is always a real pleasure to establish communication with you, thanks a lot for everything you have done for me, your teachings, your frienship, 18 years ago that I finished my mission, it seems to me as it were yesterday, nowadays I am married, with 3 children, and reaching some goals and waiting to get others. You know that to rear children nowadays presents new challenges but I continue struggling with faith facing the challenges of life day by day. I bear my testimony that Jesus Christ lives, the Book of Mormon is true, that the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day saints is the only true Church on Earth, Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen
P.D. I like receiving your thoughts in English also.
